The Program for Enriching the Collection of Spanish & Portuguese Children’s Literature in Finland’s Public Libraries is celebrating its 9th edition! Thanks to the participation of various institutions and Embassies, 203 new children’s titles will be added to Helmet’s libraries and the Multilingual Library.
We are very happy, because this edition has included 80 more books, compared to the 2023 bestowal.
Thank you to all the people and organizations involved in 2024 edition in alphabetical order:
- Embassy of Argentina.
- Camara del Livro-Brasil, the Brazilian Embassy and Instituto Guimarães Rosa Helsinque.
- División de las Culturas, las Artes, el Patrimonio y Diplomacia Pública DIRAC-Chile and Chilean Embassy.

Also, we wanted to extend our gratitude to the publisher houses Edicões Barbatana, SM, pequena zahar, Escarlate, Mondru Editora and Brinque-Book, and to the authors Keila Knobel and Flávia Lins, for contributing to the bestowal of children’s books in Brazilian Portuguese.
Thank you all for collaborating with your books!
Since it began in 2016, we have delivered over 600 books with the help of Embassies, authors, book institutions, and publishers. We’re very happy because this edition includes books in Basque, Galician and Catalan.
Through this program, we continue to promote reading and the learning of heritage languages within minority language communities in Finland.
Celebrating Vantaa’s 50th Anniversary
The bestowal ceremony took place on November 6th in the new Mosaiikki Cultural Center of Vantaa, which is just one year old and also houses the Mosaiikki Library.
We chose to celebrate this edition in Vantaa not only to join in the city’s 50th anniversary celebrations but also to thank the municipality for always welcoming Ninho and supporting children’s culture and the diverse childhoods in this international city.
Javier Knuutila-Gauto, chairperson of the Kulttuurikeskus Ninho board, highlighted the importance of this program, stating that with more than 600 books delivered, “we continue to promote reading and the learning of heritage languages in minority language communities in Finland.”
The Deputy Mayor of Urban Culture and Wellbeing, Riikka Åstrand, emphasized the importance of having inspiring books for children from different backgrounds, noting that Vantaa is the most international city in Finland, with 27% of the population having a non-Finnish background. She also pointed out the significance of Vantaa’s libraries for the citizens, as they receive around 1.6 million visits every year.
Mikko Mäkelä, Director of Early Childhood Education for the city, mentioned that around 1,000 residents of Vantaa speak Spanish and Portuguese, making these collaborations crucial not only for the children who speak these languages but also for everyone interested in learning them.
Almost 10 editions of a program supported by many stakeholders
The Mosaiikki Cultural Center in Vantaa also gathered representatives from Ibero-American institutions that participated in this year’s ceremony.
The Ambassador of Argentina, Carlos Federico Mascias, emphasized that childhood and culture are key elements for knowledge, making it very important to start reading and learning from an early age.
The Ambassador of Chile, Belén Sapag, confirmed the Embassy’s participation in the program for the coming years and highlighted the importance and desire of children to maintain their background and Finnish roots.
The Ambassador of Mexico, Enrique Rojo Stein, noted that the books delivered this year included titles not only from Mexico but also from other Latin American authors, aiming to showcase the diversity of Latin American children’s literature.
The Ambassador of Portugal, Francisco Vaz Patto, expressed his gratitude to the Multilingual Library for managing and promoting the collections of children’s books in Portuguese. He also explained that all the books delivered by the Embassy this year are included in the Portuguese Government’s National Reading Plan.
The Ambassador of Uruguay, Alejandra De Bellis, explained that the goal for their 2024 delivery was to include titles published in 2024 in Uruguay, with most focusing on respect and protection of animals.
The Information Specialist from the Multilingual Library, Eeva Pilviö, concluded the speeches by noting that her team will be responsible for cataloging the books in Portuguese, Catalan, Galician, and Basque. She also reminded everyone that citizens can request these books from the Multilingual Library to have them available in their local library, regardless of where they live in Finland. Currently, the Multilingual Library has 1,400 books in Portuguese.
3 new organizations join Ninho’s Book Program in 2024
In its 9th edition, our Book Program welcomes three new organizations! The Dirección General del Libro, del Cómic y de la Lectura of the Spanish Ministry of Culture will enrich the Helmet children’s book collection with 23 books in Spanish, Galician, Basque, and Catalan.
The Deputy Head of Mission of Spain, Mencía Manso, expressed her joy at contributing to the “wonderful Helmet system” and noted that by including the three new languages, the collection of titles also reflects Spain’s cultural diversity.
Additionally, Camara do Livro-Brasil and the Brazilian Embassy have joined the program, alongside the long-time collaborator Instituto Guimarães Rosa – Helsinque.
In their first year, the Brazilian organizations have given 65 children’s books in Brazilian Portuguese. These books will be available in the Multilingual Library in the coming months.
The Minister-Counsellor of Brazil, Braz da Costa Baracuhy Neto, highlighted the importance of Ninho’s program, as well as our Kolibrí Festivaali, for all Portuguese-speaking families living in the city, a number that is increasing every year.
“These programs and activities have a very positive impact on the Brazilian community living in Finland, which wants to maintain both Brazilian and Finnish as home languages.”
Thank you all and welcome!
The Kolibrí Collection Created by Vantaa Will Be Updated
Thanks to the 2024 book delivery to Vantaa’s libraries, the library staff will update the Kolibrí Collection of children’s books in Spanish.
The Kolibrí Collection was created by Vantaa’s libraries with a selection of children’s and young adult literature included in our bestowal in 2021. This first delivery included 134 books donated by the Embassies of Argentina and Chile.
With the addition of 90 Spanish books in 2024, we are delighted to announce that Vantaa’s Kolibrí Collection will now consist of a total of 224 titles for early readers, children, and young readers.
This online section is a great resource for Spanish-speaking families, Spanish teachers, and anyone interested in enjoying children’s literature in Spanish. It allows users to access available titles, find their locations, and reserve them for pickup at the nearest library.
We extend our thanks to the librarians responsible for cataloging the titles: Aino Ketonen and Lia Gasbarra. Thank you both!
